Not just a pretty, pretty WordPress website – but pretty useless too

• Science, marketing and the artistic ability in website development ? Well yes, good looking is excellent, but how often do you see a webpage that looks good, but fails to deliver anything useful efficiently? Add to that fault, can you actually find it to begin with? Website developers must be creative, technical orientated and understand how to use pages as a marketing tool to produce a site that is fit for the purpose.
• Pause and think too about download speeds? Use of CSS for ease of maintenance?.
• A sure sign of naive development is exposure to email address harvesting bots who will soon spam the site mercilessly

WordPress browser and screen resolution problems

How often have you seen a site and thought “why on earth have they published this? it’s a mess.” The obvious reason is lack of testing with different screen sizes and browsers.

WordPress Course Overview

We care that you get what you need so you should email us a 3 page mock up, using MS-Word or Open Office of each page’s content. i.e. images and text, This is us to check it out for you to get the most out our free advice and ultimately achieve a good end result. Make sure you are using your own images or have rights to use the images – we will show you just how easy it is on the web to find out who is using copyright infringed images – fines are hefty.  If you have not got copy we will supply you with text and images. But, it really is better if you come with a good idea of your content and images to the course and we get to evaluated them before you arrive. I know I sound like your mother there :). Think about it though? We are not only training you, we are offering consultancy adding value to your  your course.

All out training material is available online on our ‘Moodle’ system. With this you can access the information and exchange ideas with other training delegates over a period of time.

One day is great if the site is already set up and you want to add and edit it. But, and probably to our cost, we don’t do Machiavelli marketing, so whatever you might have been told, go back to how long it took for you to really get to grips with your first word processor.

Doing a website is NOT the same as some DTP for a faxed leaflet. There are large number of factors that need to be addressed when building a WordPress website that is available across the world, running on many different types of hardware and software systems that won’t feature on a piece of paper printed off on a printer in Exeter and then posted.  Some are described on this site, but like every ‘trade’ there are tricks. There is also specific knowledge and techniques that are not intuitive or transferable from something else.

We aim to cover the necessary basics on our courses. Yes WordPress is easy some say, so why are they running a course?  There’s more to web success that 6 hours in a room! A one day course simply opens the door…
